AWS Cloud Engineer- Remote within the United States
Job Summary/Objective
Plans and coordinates the design, installation, administration, and usage of cloud server, storage, virtualization, and other distributed technologies. Focuses on implementation and administration of Cloud Governance; implementation and support of both on-premise (VMWare) and cloud workloads (Azure/AWS) as provided by Cloud and Solution Architects. Works closely with DevOps and Application teams to follow best practices and ensure the reliability of OEC SaaS offerings.
Key Responsibilities & Duties (essential to the job)
- Follows established procedures and directions regarding authorized software (operating system and application) installed on servers and workstations.
- Oversees applications running, identifies and resolves problems; continues performance enhancements with measurable benchmarks.
- Researches, installs, and tests software updates and patches to support applications and various operating systems.
- Interfaces with various areas of IT staff to support ongoing efforts, giving and receiving technical information.
- Provides 2nd-level technical support for cloud issues.
- Provides technology stewardship for distributed technologies such as DNS, SMTP, DHCP domain controllers, active directory applications, printing, mail, web servers and FTP services for the Enterprise.
- Implements best practices for infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
- Addresses potential areas where existing policies and procedures require change, or where new ones need to be developed.
- Monitors system logs and activity on cloud/platform environments. Reacts to alerts and escalates accordingly by engaging the necessary resources (internal and external) to OEC ensuring prompt resolution and minimal impact on services.
- Implements security best practices and conducts regular security assessments to cloud/platform infrastructure.
- Monitors, manages and optimizes cloud environments (e.g. AWS, Azure) to ensure high availability and cost-efficiency.
- Stays current with industry trends and emerging technologies to improve cloud/platform engineering practices continuously.
Education
An undergraduate degree is required from an accredited college or university, with a focus in Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline. In the absence of a degree, equivalent work experience directly related to the key responsibilities of the role will be considered in lieu of the degree.
Experience, Skills and Key Competencies
- At least 4 years of experience in troubleshooting hardware/software for servers and workstations within a cloud environment
- At least 2 years of systems engineering experience, designing and implementing VMWare and Microsoft server/workstation technologies
- 3-6 months of experience writing moderately complex code and developing technical specifications for simple requests.
Must also be able to demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of Windows Server, VMware Virtualization software Microsoft Active Directory, TCP/IP/ DHCP / WINS / DNS, Microsoft SQL Server, local and wide area networks (LAN/WAN), Switches, and Routers.
- Basic understanding of platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, and automation.
- Broad technical capabilities to distinguish between hardware/software-related problems.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively speak to and interact with all levels of individuals in a professional and easy-to-understand manner.
- Comfortable with taking ownership of work and independently completing assignments with limited guidance, while also being comfortable with working and collaborating as a team in a diverse work group.
- Able to apply principles of logical thinking to collect data, draw valid conclusions, consider options, recommend solutions, and solve problems.
- Able to effectively work and thrive in a remote/hybrid work environment that has limited opportunities for in-person interactions.
Special Position Requirements
- Must be available for 24-hour ‘on-call’ service to respond to system emergencies.
