General Description:

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist identifies, develops, and participates in the implementation of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs and related projects through risk identification, working with management and staff to promote ongoing continuous improvement of EHS programs. 

Specific Responsibilities & Duties:

Safety and Health Functions:

  • Promotes a safe working environment and adheres to Environmental Health and Safety procedures, company safety rules, Safety, Processes/Procedures, Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) in line with the company’s objectives and policies at all times.
  • Regularly keeps informed about State and Federal safety-related laws, rules and regulations affecting the workplace, making information available and recommendations for changes and innovations as appropriate. Inform management of any new laws or changes to existing regulations. 
  • Update and maintains OSHA required programs, training, logs, records, and reports
  • Adheres to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (O.S.H.A.) standards.
  • Develops and updates Policies and Procedures (SOP’s), including developing a matrix of hazard specific safety training programs for each job assignment.
  • Develops, reviews, and updates a written Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for all positions, as necessary. 
  • Reviews the use of Personal Protective Equipment and make any necessary recommendations.
  • Conducts routine inspections, risk assessments, and participate in investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Provides or coordinate training. 
  • Leads company’s Emergency Response team and maintains operational readiness.
  • Other duties may be assigned by Management.

Environmental Functions:

  • Ensures facility is current on all environmental regulations, including maintenance of regulatory agency permits, licenses and required reports.
  • Maintains environment management system for sustainable development, resource conservation, and waste reductions.
  • Develops pollution control and recycling programs
  • Coordinates all aspects of pollution prevention, waste management, environmental health, risk assessment, and employee involvement.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance in hazardous waste storage area – proper disposal, containment, labeling, documentation, etc. 
  • Implements storm water discharge program including inspection and sampling tests and document appropriately.
  • Coordinates compliance and enforcement efforts with state and local agencies.
  • Writes sustainability SOPs.
  • Performs accurate record keeping and gathers statistics in compliance with governmental regulations and/or company needs. 
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures including safety, environmental and Good Manufacturing Practice rules.
  • Other duties may be assigned by Management.

Worker’s Comp Functions:

  • Conducts detailed investigations on all work-related accidents/injuries.
  • Processes all Worker’s comp claims and provides the necessary information to the insurance carrier and company management.
  • Performs accident investigations. With Management assistance, suggests corrective actions and implementation schedules for changes designed to prevent future reoccurrence of injury.
  • Provides assistance to employees to fill out claims and reviews claims filled out by employees for completions. Ensures timely notification of claims to insurance carriers. Ensures incidents are reported and logged timely in-accordance to best practices for maintaining a favorable Captive rating.
  • Tracks claims from filling through follow-ups with employee and management.
  • Coordinates with Payroll Department concerning continuation of pay or light duty hours.
  • Contacts occupation clinic provider to confirm employee work status.
  • Assist with duties assigned with workman’s comp. risk management to include providing input towards the development of policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with HR, Safety, and Compliance teams and Directors regarding incident reports and claims/losses.
  • Manages the return to work and light duty programs.
  • Provides internal support for workers’ compensation cases. Acts as facility safety contact for work comp claims questions, interfaces with insurance adjusters, medical professionals, and injured workers.
  • Works with Management, insurance carrier, and occupational clinic to evaluate workers compensation claims. Assist with establishing reserves and claim closure strategies.
  • General support in investigating and proper handling of claims; including issuing drafts and mileage verification.
  • Managed telephone calls from claimants, providers, and company personnel.
  • Other duties may be assigned by Management.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Long periods of standing and/or walking, 
  • Requires bending, stooping, squatting, or kneeling at times.
  • Walking on hard cement and asphalt surfaces throughout the shift.

Qualifications:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Safety or Environmental-related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in EHS specialist role; preferably in cosmetics process manufacturing or an FDA regulated industry.
  • Proven work experience with common ESG reporting platforms i.e. CDP, EcoVadis etc. is preferred.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge and understanding of EHS matters, including laws and regulations.
  • Proven ability to design, develop, implement EHS programs.
  • Thorough understanding of OHSA regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience, ability, and willingness to respond to emergency situations, including working with management to provide advice and direction on behalf of EHS.
  • Attends seminars or reads training materials for continuing education and shows initiative in learning and keeping up to date.
  • Strong English communications skills: speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Strong math and analytical skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division 
  • Advanced PC Knowledge i.e. MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) is preferred.
  • Ability to create training materials utilizing various multi-media.
  • Able to work independently and as a team player
  • Flexibility to work special schedules as required satisfying job requirements
  • Good attendance record.
