Environmental Professional Regulatory Compliance and Report Writing

Job Summary:
The Environmental Professional will be responsible for surface water and sediment data analysis, review and interpretation of state and federal regulations, technical report development, and peer review of data deliverables. The Environmental Professional will lead the review of regulatory documents and requirements, interpret their applications for monitoring, and screen them against surface water analytical results. The Environmental Professional must have excellent verbal and written communication skills for disseminating information to team members as well as for authoring technical reports. 

The Environmental Professional will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner; will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety and security an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to pause or stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Duties/Responsibilities:
•    Review and interpret applicable federal and state surface water regulations, communicate findings clearly to provide guidance for data collection and analysis. 
•    Author technical reports including data analysis, developing technical content, and reviewing documents as required.
•    Screen surface water data against applicable standards, interpret results, and communicate findings. 
•    Ensures compliance with NPDES permits and New Mexico Surface Water Quality Standards (NMAC 20.6.4), including keeping up-to-date with changes in federal and state regulations, and determining and communicating impacts.
•    Assist with developing scope and analysis of remote sensing data, including geomorphic and vegetation change techniques.
•    Assist with management of storm water sample processing facility, including managing an inventory of chemical preservatives and maintenance of a fume hood and deionized water filtration system.
•    Ability to coordinate with, and willingness to take direction from, project leads as required.
•    Comply with all health & safety policies and practices.
•    Comply with all site access and security requirements. 
•    Other duties in support of the Water Program as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities: 
•    Ability to understand and interpret environmental regulations (experience with NPDES Permits and New Mexico surface water regulations a plus)
•    Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills, including an ability to author technical documents and communicate findings to a wide variety of audiences. 
•    Self-motivated professional who demonstrates strong time management, organization, and communication skills.
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs (R programming or GIS experience a plus).
•    Valid driver’s license required and have a clear driving record to drive/work in the field.
•    Ability to work in a team-oriented project environment.
•    Familiarity with the LANL site, access requirements, general employee requirements, and work environment preferred. 
•    Broadly applied software including Microsoft Office.

Education and Experience:
•    Bachelor's degree in Science, Environmental Studies, or related technical discipline.
•    At least five years of relevant experience

•    Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work
•    The employee exerts up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Will also be carrying up to 30 pounds while hiking. 
•    The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; hike; use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms
•    The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
•    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision

Work Environment: 
This position will be required to work in the outdoors, and at times may include walking and hiking several miles while carrying equipment weighing approximately 30 lbs.
