Job Title:  Natural Resources Intern

 

Location: Ketchikan and Prince of Wales, Alaska

 

Job Summary:

Spend the summer in rural Southeast Alaska as the Natural Resources Intern. You will become part of our natural resources team who sustainably manage Sealaska’s lands post-harvest. You will spend most days outdoors, hiking to field sites and gaining on-the-job training in natural resource and land management techniques and methods, and working with teams on restoration projects. All projects are dependent upon available fieldwork and include working alongside our community forest partnerships on Prince of Wales Island, Kake and Hoonah, AK. Additional work may include conducting surveys and research on our carbon offset project land. You’ll engage with people and communities throughout your internship and work to enhance and sustain the Alaskan wilderness.

Sealaska manages 365,000 acres of land in Southeast Alaska. The Natural Resources Intern will be based at the Sealaska offices in Ketchikan and/or Klawock, AK. You will also travel to other locations on Sealaska land in Southeast Alaska.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform forest management tasks. (Examples only: pre-commercial thinning planning and layout, pruning planning and layout, post-management research plot data collection, and carbon offset plot data collection and reporting.)
  • Collaborate with natural resource management professionals in SE Alaska.
  • Work on sub-projects within regional community forest partnerships; projects may include stream restoration, salmon habitat surveys, and forest road condition assessment.
  • Provide recommendations to supervisors for improving processes specific to post-harvest management, both short & long-term.
  • Research potential habitat restoration project partner expansion
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Physically fit and in demonstrated good health to hike long distances through difficult terrain
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to adapt to schedule and environment changes
  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

 

Education and Experience:

  • Must be age 18 at time of hire
  • Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)

 

Preferred:

  • Major/minor in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or related field or have relevant experience
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Outdoor Survival Skills
  • Comfortable with small boat operation
  • At least a 2.5 GPA
  • Strong critical thinking and research skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to travel, as needed

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
  • Occasionally travel may be necessary by small plane, boat, or off-road vehicle to remote work sites under supervision of qualified staff.
