Position Summary: We are seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Genetic Counselor to join our high-risk maternal-fetal medicine practice. The ideal candidate will work closely with patients, families, and healthcare providers to assess genetic risks, interpret genetic testing results, and provide counseling and support for families facing complex pregnancies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Risk Assessment: Evaluate family and medical histories to identify potential genetic risks to the fetus.
- Education: Provide information about genetic conditions, testing options, and implications of results, helping parents understand the relevance to their pregnancy.
- Testing Guidance: Discuss the different types of prenatal tests available (e.g., non-invasive prenatal testing, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis) and help parents make informed decisions.
- Result Interpretation: Explain test results clearly, including the significance of findings and potential next steps, whether the results are positive, negative, or inconclusive.
- Support: Offer emotional support to families dealing with complex information or potential diagnoses, addressing concerns and questions throughout the process.
- Referral: Connect families with additional resources, specialists, or support groups as needed, particularly if a genetic condition is identified.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough records of counseling sessions, assessments, and recommendations.
- Continued Education: Stay updated on advancements in genetics and prenatal testing to provide the most current information to families
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program.
- Current ABGC board certification (preferred) or board-eligible. If board-eligible, expected to obtain board certification within one year of hire.
- Current license to practice in the state of South Carolina as a Genetic Counselor required to be obtained within 90 days of start date (preferred) or limited license obtained prior to start date with intent to obtain full license within one year of hire.
- Previous experience in a maternal-fetal medicine or high-risk obstetric setting preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and empathetically.
- Proficient in electronic medical records and other relevant software.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment
