JOB SUMMARY:

The Safety & Risk Management Internship is designed to provide an introduction to transit safety and Risk Management at MCTS. Typical duties include providing support for transit Safety and Risk activities, e.g., collecting / verifying data, preparing information on safety & risk issues for both riders and employees, and creating analytics and updating databases that support recommendations to elevate the Safety Culture at MCTS . 

 

Interns would be employed on a part-time, temporary basis from June 2025 to September 2025. Hours would typically be from 35 hours per week (specific days and times to be determined). This position reports to the Risk Director and works with transit claims team in the Department of Risk Management.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist Risk Director with MCTS programs related to health and safety, environmental conditions, fleet vehicles, building access and security issues.
  2. Log all incident reports and update in appropriate shared drive locations (including injuries/near misses/property damage/OSHA recordables)
  3. Assist various Departments at MCTS in updating Safety Plans, Safety Training modules and Policies recommending best practices and updated training.
  4. Assist Safety Managers/Department Managers in developing monthly safety training topics for fleet, transportation and Safety Promotion Committee, newsletters, promoting safety awareness.
  5. Update and post safety impact committee notes after sitting in monthly team meeting
  6. Assist with support of MCTS fleet, for example tracking recall notices, tracking vehicle preventative maintenance (PM’s), shuttling vehicles etc.
  7. Assist with weekly and/or monthly facility safety audits/walk-throughs (i.e. Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV’s)/safe workday calendars/hoist inspections/first aid kits/ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)/fire extinguishers/eye wash/CO detectors etc.)
  8. Assist with posting and reporting the generation of monthly incident and injury stats for various safety modules at MCTS (Vehicle accident review committee, Safety Promotion Committee, Safety Assurance Committee, etc.)
  9. Assist with updating safety footwear program employee reimbursement program/file development/refinement
  10. Obtaining/generating information for workers comp claims 
  11. Assist in Accident investigation.
  12. Risk Management Team with projects and administrative tasks as needed
  13. Perform other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be currently enrolled in a university, or recent graduate, pursuing a degree in occupational safety, environmental health or related field.
  2. All applications must include the following information:

  3. Undergraduate/graduate transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). Priority will be given to applicants with cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (4.0 scale). OSHA Certifications preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge in Microsoft Suite and ability to learn new software applications.
  2. Skilled in effectively communicating with employees at all levels, both verbal and written.
  3. Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly according to requirements.
  4. Ability to work well with others, connect and work with MCTS staff within all levels of the agency.
  5. Ability to demonstrate conduct conforming to a set of values and accepted standards.
  6. Ability to be truthful and be seen as credible in the workplace.
  7. Ability to complete tasks or continue in a course of action in spite of opposition or discouragement.
  8. Ability to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships.
  9. Ability to identify and correct conditions that affect employee safety.
  10. Ability to focus on goals, pay attention to detail, and analyze data to ensure that it is accurate and reliable.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  1. Work is frequently conducted in an office or similar indoor environment. Work may sometimes be located outdoors, in a street location, at a construction site, in the community or in a vehicle.
  2. Physical requirements are those described as sedentary work exerting 20 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently.
