The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers.  To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

New York City Teens Connection (NYCTC) is an adolescent sexual health program of the Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health (BMIRH) in the Division of Family and Child Health within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). By engaging youth, parents, community-based organizations, schools, clinics, and citywide agencies in a comprehensive effort to improve adolescent sexual health, NYCTC will help youth in NYC learn about their sexual and reproductive health, access the information and resources they need to make healthy decisions, and feel empowered to act on these decisions.

Poor health outcomes rarely occur in isolation, and certain communities tend to face multiple health inequities. These unfair and avoidable disparities are rooted in historical and contemporary injustices and discrimination – including racism – and require deliberate corrective efforts to repair. NYCTC strives to apply a sexual and reproductive justice and racial framework to its work as part of BMIRH, which prioritizes individual choice and bodily autonomy within the contexts of historical events, lived experiences, sexualities, and social conditions, and engages community partners in its efforts. NYCTC is also part of a larger health department effort to advance just and fair outcomes for all New Yorkers, particularly those most marginalized, and prioritizes neighborhoods with histories of social disinvestment and persistently poor health outcomes.

NYCTC works through partnerships and existing systems to bring evidence-based sex education programs and connections to reproductive health clinics to thousands of young people ages 13-19 annually, across eight priority neighborhoods with histories of social and economic disinvestment. 

NYCTC reaches young people with sexual health education across six settings. Reducing the Risk, recommended by the NYC Department of Education (DOE), is delivered annually in traditional high schools, Teen Health Project is delivered in transfer schools, international high schools, and youth-serving organizations, Making Proud Choices is delivered in middle schools, and Making a Difference is delivered in District 75 schools. Seventeen Days and Plan A will reach youth in clinics and youth-serving organizations, including juvenile justice programs. 

All partnering schools and youth-serving organizations are also linked to local “teen-friendly” clinics that provide high quality sexual and reproductive health services to young people. Instructors incorporate a visit to the linked clinic within each evidence-based program.

The program also reaches parents of adolescents through School Parent Coordinators and a variety of parent groups, and provides parents with education and support to improve their communication with youth around sexual and reproductive health. 

Building on existing relationships between DOHMH and community organizations, local leaders, and other stakeholders, NYCTC has established local Community Advisory Teams and Youth Leadership Teams in 3 boroughs who inform the programmatic work, encourage systems-based changes, and help disseminate information throughout the priority communities. 

Lastly, an evaluation plan includes regular monitoring of key processes and outcome measures for each component, providing a basis for continual improvements.

POSITION OVERVIEW

New York City Teens Connection (NYCTC) offers an exciting, unique opportunity for a public health professional to work on an innovative project and to engage with teens, parents, community leaders, clinical services providers, and other stakeholders that work with teens. The project aim is to foster an environment where all teens develop the skills and possess the tools to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and know where to go for health services.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with Acting Assistant Director of Evidence Based Programs in Youth Service Organizations to recruit and confirm implementing partners of various evidence-based program curricula to adolescents
• Provide training, technical assistance and supplemental materials to partners
• Work closely with implementing partners and NYCTC evaluation staff to collect data and track all adolescents receiving the selected evidence-based programs in all settings
• Work with the Deputy Director of Clinic Engagement to facilitate the implementation of linkage relationships between partnering organizations and local clinics
• Represent NYCTC to partnering organizations
• Travel throughout the city
• Deliver program supplies to partner sites
• Assist with other duties, tasks, and special projects as may be required by NYCDOHMH 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in public health or relevant field. Master’s degree preferred. 2+ years experience in health services settings and /or schools. 2+ years Program Coordinator level experience. 
• Experience with and knowledge of adolescent reproductive health and evidence-based programming. 
• Minimum 1-2 years experience recruiting and maintaining relationships with community-based sexual education programs.
• Demonstrated experience in meeting facilitation and training implementation. 
• Experience working collaboratively in small teams
• Effective communication and organization skills
• Ability to multi-task
• Experience working in neighborhoods and/or communities experiencing health inequities or other forms of social injustice
• Familiarity with racial and social justice frameworks and approaches.   
• Knowledge of adolescent sexual and reproductive health
• Experience with community-based research and evaluation
• Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
• Ability to balance multiple projects with varying deadlines
• Knowledge and experience working with sexual health curricula preferably evidence -based programs
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals
• Driver’s license preferred

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
