Job Title: Greenhouse & Farmers Market Coordinator Intern

 

Location: Hoonah, AK

 

Job Summary:

Help manage a large, newly built hydroponic greenhouse in Hoonah, Alaska this summer as the Greenhouse & Farmers Market Coordinator Intern! Apply your interest in science and gardening to learn about maintaining and operating a local greenhouse operation. You will gain leadership, business, and managerial skills by assisting the team with a weekly farmers market. You will be working alongside the Local Foods Coordinator with the local tribe’s Environmental Department – Hoonah Indian Association (HIA) – on this exciting new venture in food security. You will also help increase the impact of the greenhouse and other HIA programs by sharing news, images, and stories on HIA’s social media platforms.

 

This internship will take place in person in Hoonah, Alaska.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist in transplanting, germinating, harvesting, and maintaining hydroponic greenhouse.
  • Assist in farmers market set up and marketing the produce from the greenhouse in Hoonah weekly.
  • Share news, images, and stories of the greenhouse and other HIA programs on social media.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Willingness to learn about greenhouse management.
  • Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Ability to travel as needed.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Must be age 18 at time of hire
  • Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

 

Preferred:

  • Studying a science-based field such as biology, botany, natural resource, or environmental science
  • Gardening experience
  • Experience with storytelling and social media
  • At least a 2.5 GPA
  • Strong critical thinking and research skills
  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
